Memories and Stories My grandfather was called Pappy by his 10 grandchildren. He was short, about 5'6" and stocky, but not fat. All his brothers, and even some sisters were six feet tall or more. He was the youngest child in his family and his father died before he was old enough to have any memory of him. When he was young he lost the little finger on one hand as a result of blood-poisoning that occured in a cut he received at "hog-killing" time. The finger was removed without the aid of anesthesia. All his life he had phantom pain on that hand. When he moved to Itawamba Co., MS in the 1920's, he brought with him some of the biggest mules ever seen in that part of the country. He only lived there a short while before his first wife, Eva, contracted TB and they had to move to Portales, NM for her health. When she died he returned to his MS farm. He met my grandmother while appearing in a community play. |
